Talk on Mental Prayer

A Course by Fr. Steve on Prayer.

Beginning on March 7, Fr. Steve Mattson will offer a two-part series of talks on the subject of prayer.

PART ONE:
An Introduction to Mental/Contemplative Prayer (March 7, 14, 21)

Fr. Steve will give an introduction to the Christian discipline of mental/contemplative prayer in this three part series. It will build on the introduction to prayer that Brian Fink offered during Advent, but Fr. Steve will address the theology and practice of mental prayer, and will give “homework” that helps even “beginners” (and we’re all beginners, says St. Teresa of Avila) grow in their ability to open their hearts and minds to the Lord in prayer. She famously said that “Mental Prayer is nothing else than an intimate friendship, a frequent heart-to-heart with Him by whom we know ourselves to be loved.” Prayer is about letting the love of God into our hearts, opening our hearts to Him who is love, and loving Him in return.

PART TWO:
An Introduction to Ignatian Rules of Discernment (April 25, May 2, May 9)

In this three part series, Fr. Steve will discuss the basic movements of consolation and desolation as developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, and will provide practical guidance and “homework” to continue the practice of mental prayer which he addressed in the earlier series on Mental/Contemplative Prayer.
