The Nativity of John the Baptist

Homilies
Homily Series: Priesthood

Some young men are called to fulfill the role of the priest.

Today is the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Fr. Steve explains John the Baptist’s role in preparing the ministry of Jesus who is the true messiah. Even in the womb John announced the arrival of Jesus by leaping for joy when Mary visited his mother Elizabeth. Just as God had a plan for John’s life, so he has a plan for each of us. John was a prophet and was a witness to holiness. The Lord can do tremendous things in us and though us if we remain open to him.

Fr. Steve quotes from Blessed John Henry Newman, stating that no one is superfluous and each and every person has an important role, a task that only they and no other can perform. If we can find out what God wants us to do and embrace it we will find happiness. God wants us to say yes to his call in our lives. Many people doubt that they have any worth at all. But as it says in Psalm 139, “I praise you for I am wonderfully made.”

Fr. Steve witnesses to his deepening relationship with God as he was growing up in his family and seeking God’s will, culminating in his ordination to the priesthood. He exhorts all present to open up the possibility that a member of their family could have a vocation to the priesthood. Our life belongs to the Lord, and we must strive to do his will in order to find fulfillment and joy.
